Rumeen Farhana slams govt over rise in crimes in its first 100 days 08.06.2026

The swift conviction of Ramisa Akter's murderers within 19 days highlights a stark contrast to the usual four-year average for cases of violence against women and children in Bangladesh. While this specific verdict offered closure, it underscored the systemic inefficiencies that have delayed justice for countless other victims. The Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal, despite a rapid four-day resolution for Ramisa's case, faces a backlog of over 1,800 cases. Decades-long waits are not uncommon, and even the 2020 death penalty for rape has failed to deter perpetrators, with alarming numbers of young girls being victimized annually. Though a new High Court bench for death references is a welcome step, addressing broader legal framework gaps is crucial to eliminate impunity caused by delayed justice.
