Russia denies report of pressuring Belarus to deepen role in Ukraine war 25.06.2026

Russia’s government categorically denied a recent report alleging it is pressuring Belarus to take a more active combat role in the war against Ukraine. The denial was issued by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who stated that such claims are “false” and “a misunderstanding of the allied relations between Moscow and Minsk.” The report in question, published by a Western intelligence source, suggested that Russian officials had held closed-door meetings with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to demand the deployment of Belarusian troops along the northern border of Ukraine. However, Peskov emphasized that Belarus’s current participation is limited to providing logistical support and allowing Russian forces to stage operations from its territory, which is already permitted under the Union State framework. Belarus has walked a careful line throughout the war, publicly backing Russia while avoiding direct military engagement to escape Western sanctions. Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that Belarusian troops will not fight in Ukraine unless the country is attacked first. Analysts suggest that this denial aims to reassure both domestic audiences and the international community that Belarus remains a reluctant participant, while also countering narratives of deeper Russian coercive diplomacy. The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the Russia-Belarus alliance, where Belarus seeks to maintain sovereignty amid Moscow’s strategic demands.
