Russia ramps up aerial attacks as it struggles on the ground in Ukraine 04.06.2026

Russia has intensified its aerial attacks on Ukraine, deploying unprecedented numbers of drones and missiles as its ground forces struggle to gain significant territory. This strategy aims to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses with successive waves of cheap drones, fast ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles, including a record eight hypersonic "Zircon" missiles on Tuesday, none of which were intercepted. These barrages, which killed 23 and injured 151 on Tuesday, are also intended to sow fear among civilians and pressure Ukraine's leadership to end the war. Ukraine's air defenses, while effective against 90% of drones, face increasing difficulties with high-speed ballistic and hypersonic missiles, exacerbated by a shortage of interceptors, with President Zelensky appealing to allies for more supplies.
