Russia Weighs in on the Necessity of Presidential Elections in Ukraine 05.07.2026

Svetlana Zhurova, First Deputy Chairperson of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, stated the necessity of holding presidential elections in Ukraine to ensure the legal integrity of future peace agreements. According to the deputy, Volodymyr Zelenskyy's current status as an illegitimate leader could become an obstacle to signing documents, as European partners may challenge their legal status. Zhurova emphasized the importance of pre-determining the individuals authorized to sign official papers to avoid legal disputes. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously refuted rumors regarding holding elections this year, stating that parliamentary elections in the autumn will only take place in Russia. This discussion highlights the growing complexity of diplomatic processes and the need for a clear legal foundation for any future negotiations between Russia and Ukraine amidst the current political crisis.
