Russia's Losses in Ukraine War Exceed All US Combat Deaths Since World War II 05.07.2026

According to recent estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Russia has killed at least 450,000 soldiers in the Ukraine war since the invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure exceeds the total number of US combat deaths since World War II by more than fourfold. In total, Russian losses, including wounded, amount to approximately 1.4 million people. The demographic and economic consequences for Russia are massive, as the losses exceed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan by 28 times. Despite these enormous sacrifices, Russia's territorial gains, such as the advance toward Pokrovsk, are minimal and inefficient. A significant factor for the high death toll is the use of modern technology; over 90 percent of Russian losses are attributed to drone attacks. The current loss rate of up to eight to one compared to Ukraine illustrates the enormous exhaustion of the Russian armed forces.
