SA accused of ‘unlawful’ R279m arms exports to the US despite international law violations 03.06.2026

The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) has filed a lawsuit in the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria, seeking to suspend permits that authorized over R279 million in arms exports from South Africa to the United States in 2025. Filed on June 3, 2026, the case argues that these exports violate South Africa's National Conventional Arms Control Act and international law, citing overwhelming evidence of US aggression and systematic international law violations, particularly its alleged complicity in Israel's actions in Gaza and war crimes in an attack on Iran in June 2025. SALC contends that by authorizing these transfers despite knowledge of potential internationally wrongful acts, South Africa may be aiding or abetting international crimes, a claim reinforced by a previous High Court ruling in July 2024 concerning arms sales to Myanmar.
