Sabalenka, Gauff threaten player boycott of French Open over prize money 06.05.2026

World number one Aryna Sabalenka and fourth-ranked Coco Gauff have threatened a player boycott of the French Open over insufficient prize money, escalating a dispute with Roland Garros organisers. Despite a 10% increase this year to a total pot of 61.7 million euros ($72.1m), players receive less than 15% of tournament revenue, falling short of their demanded 22% to align with ATP and WTA 1000 events. Sabalenka stated that boycott might be the only way to fight for their rights, while Gauff supported the action, emphasizing the financial struggles of lower-ranked players. The French Open's payout remains lower than other Grand Slams, including the US Open's $90m and Australian Open's $80.06m. Ongoing negotiations continue, with both players expressing hope for a fair resolution that recognizes their role as the sport's primary attraction.
