SAFTU slams Ramaphosa silence on Tolashe allegations, warns of 'factional protection' 07.05.2026

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has publicly criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa for his silence regarding allegations against Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe and Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie. SAFTU secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi stated that the President must address claims involving undeclared Chinese-donated SUVs and leaked audio linked to parliamentary questions, as well as McKenzie's alleged links to organised crime. Vavi argued that Ramaphosa's inaction mirrors past instances where the ANC used its parliamentary majority to shield leaders from accountability, citing the Phala Phala scandal and the Jacob Zuma administration. He emphasized that this pattern contributes to an accountability crisis, leading to selective consequences and declining public trust, which is reflected in the ANC's electoral losses. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed Ramaphosa is addressing the matter, with Minister Tolashe having provided her report, and expects a meeting with her in the coming weeks.
