As of Monday, May 18, two wildfires, the Sandy Fire and the Santa Rosa Island Fire, were actively burning across thousands of acres in Southern California. Fueled by dry conditions and winds, the Sandy Fire, which started on Sandy Drive, rapidly grew from under 200 to over 700 acres in Ventura County by Monday afternoon, threatening homes and triggering evacuations in Simi Valley. Meanwhile, the Santa Rosa Island Fire, a human-caused blaze that began on May 15 in Santa Barbara County, had scorched 10,029 acres and remained 0% contained. This fire necessitated the closure of Santa Rosa Island by the National Park Service and resulted in the destruction of at least two historic structures.
