Sara Duterte's hitman remarks constitute crime, impeachable offense — House prosecutors 07.07.2026

During an impeachment proceeding, House prosecutors argued on Tuesday that Vice President Sara Duterte's 2024 statements regarding hiring a hitman to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez constitute both a crime and an impeachable offense. Private prosecutor Amando Virgil Ligutan testified that these remarks, made during a November 2024 press conference and an October 2024 briefing, demonstrate a clear intent and plan to harm the President. Ligutan asserted that such actions represent a betrayal of public trust and a culpable violation of the Constitution. While defense counsel Carlo Narvasa sought to delay responses until after cross-examination, Senator-judge Risa Hontiveros emphasized the need to establish the relevance of these threats to the impeachment articles. The Senate impeachment court has deferred resolving motions to strike the prosecution's statements from the record.
