A preliminary satellite map published by NASA, based on images from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite, provides a rapid estimate of the damage caused by the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela. The damage is concentrated in the coastal state of La Guaira, 30 km from Caracas, home to approximately 400,000 people. The map indicates that "it is likely that 58,870 buildings were damaged or destroyed in the affected region," highlighting sectors with at least an 80% probability of having suffered damage. NASA warns that the map is an indicator based on "abrupt surface alterations compatible with damage" and not a verification of every building, as the data has not been validated on the ground.
