Schnee-Chaos in den Alpen: Unwetterkarte färbt sich rot – wo erhebliche Lawinengefahr besteht 18.02.2026

Severe winter weather has caused significant disruption across the Alps, with heavy snowfall leading to road closures and elevated avalanche risks. In Austria, regions like Vorarlberg and Tyrol experienced substantial snow accumulation, causing traffic jams and necessitating snow chain requirements on several roads. The weather system, driven by a low-pressure area over the North Sea, is expected to bring further cold air and heavy snow, particularly to the western Northern Alps. The Institut für Schnee- und Lawinenforschung (SLF) has issued the highest warning level for parts of the Swiss canton of Wallis, where avalanches threaten inhabited areas and transport links. In Vorarlberg, significant avalanche danger exists above 1800 meters. Evacuations have occurred in Orsières, Switzerland, due to avalanche threats.
