Schneewalze prescht durch die Alpen: Chaos weitet sich aus – nächste Urlauber-Regionen im Fokus 19.02.2026

A significant winter storm, dubbed a "Schneewalze" (snow roller), is impacting the Alps, with heavy snowfall expected across parts of Austria and South Tyrol. An Adriatic low-pressure system is bringing intense snowfall, with accumulations of up to 50 centimeters possible in some regions. Weather warnings, including the second-highest "Orange" level, are active in eastern Austria and several areas of South Tyrol, including Sterzing and the Brenner Pass. The snowfall is expected to reach low altitudes, causing potential disruptions. In South Tyrol, the heaviest snowfall is anticipated around midday and early afternoon on Thursday, February 19th, with varying amounts expected across the eastern and western parts of the region. The situation is already tense, with hundreds of tourists evacuated by helicopter in the Aosta Valley. The storm is attributed to a collision between a Mediterranean low over northern Italy and a cold front from the south, with relief not expected until Friday morning, February 20th.
