Schneewalze prescht durch die Alpen: Chaos weitet sich aus – „große Vorsicht geboten“ 20.02.2026

A significant winter storm, dubbed a "Schneewalze" (snow roller), is impacting the Alps, bringing heavy snowfall and widespread disruption. An Adriatische Tief (Adriatic low-pressure system) is causing intense snowfall, with up to 50 centimeters of new snow expected in some areas. South Tyrol has already experienced over 100 snow-related incidents, including vehicle recoveries and tree removal, prompting the regional fire department to issue a warning for extreme caution due to high avalanche risk. Austria is under weather warnings, with some eastern regions at the second-highest alert level ("Orange"). Vienna anticipates up to 20 centimeters of snow, and the entire Burgenland region is expected to face snow-related disruptions. The snowfall is forecast to continue through Thursday night and into Friday morning, with relief not expected until Friday.
