Schock-Nachricht von der Bahn: Neuer Chef von DB Cargo will tausende Stellen abbauen 19.02.2026

DB Cargo's new CEO, Bernhard Osburg, has announced a significant restructuring plan that will eliminate 6,200 of the current 14,000 full-time positions in Germany, representing nearly half of the workforce. This drastic measure is part of a four-pillar strategy aimed at rescuing the highly unprofitable freight subsidiary, which must achieve profitability this year to avoid potential closure due to EU state aid regulations. The company incurred a mid-double-digit million euro operating loss last year. The plan involves a stronger European focus, reduced administrative and operational roles, and a concentration of shunting operations at four main locations, with 12 out of 27 maintenance facilities slated for closure or sale. Despite these efforts, the single wagon transport segment will remain deficit-prone and reliant on federal subsidies. The restructuring, which includes a cultural shift and increased accountability, is expected to be gradually implemented starting this summer, with the new single wagon transport structure fully in place by 2027.
