Scholenkoepels teleurgesteld over blokkades XR: "Mag niet over ruggen van leerlingen gaan" 05.03.2026

Two major secondary school organizations in Amsterdam, OSVO and the Samenwerkingsverband voortgezet onderwijs, expressed disappointment on March 5, 2026, regarding Extinction Rebellion's (XR) actions, which involved blocking the entrances of approximately forty schools overnight. They stated that raising awareness for important issues should not come at the expense of students and invited XR for a dialogue on how to jointly increase attention for the topic in schools. One affected school, IVKO in De Pijp, remained closed for the first three class hours due to its locks being glued and sealed. While the school's director, Kim Wannet, showed some understanding for the activists' intent, Mayor Halsema strongly criticized the actions as incomprehensible and contrary to XR's stated goals. XR, in a written response, defended their protest as a peaceful and powerful way to highlight the lack of climate policy, suggesting the mayor should focus on the educational impact of the climate crisis on children.
