School fire tragedies in Kenya over the years 03.06.2026

Kenya has a persistent problem with fatal school fires, particularly in dormitories, spanning nearly three decades. The most recent incident on May 28, 2026, at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru resulted in the deaths of 16 girls. This tragedy follows a long history of similar disasters, beginning with the 1998 fire at Bombolulu Girls’ Secondary School that killed 26 girls. Other significant fires include Nyeri High School in 1999 (4 deaths), Kyunguli Secondary School in 2001 (67 deaths), Endarasha Boys’ Secondary School in 2010 (2 deaths), Asumbi Girls’ Primary School in 2012 (8 deaths), Kabarnet High School in 2017 (10 deaths), Moi Girls’ Nairobi in 2017 (10 deaths), and Hillside Endarasha Academy in 2024 (21 deaths). These recurrent incidents highlight an ongoing safety crisis in Kenyan educational institutions.
