Scientist dubbed The Bogfather is restoring peatland to fight climate change 03.07.2026

Dr. Peter Jones, known as "The Bogfather," has dedicated 30 years to restoring Wales' vital peatlands, which store 30% of the nation's land-based carbon but are currently 90% degraded. These damaged peatlands leak greenhouse gases, unlike healthy ones that act as carbon sinks. Jones's work addresses climate change, flooding, wildfires, and biodiversity loss through nature-based solutions. Historically, peatlands were undervalued, used for fuel or drained for agriculture, leading to their degradation. Healthy peatlands, identifiable by specific vegetation like sphagnum moss, are crucial for slowing water flow and supporting diverse wildlife. Efforts are underway to restore approximately 1,800 hectares annually by 2030-1, a significant undertaking complicated by advancing climate change.
