Scientists reveal eight building blocks that make up songs of all birds 24.07.2026

Researchers from the Bioacoustics Research Lab in CRNL, France, have conducted one of the most comprehensive analyses of passerine song evolution to date. The study, published in the journal Science, examined around 116,000 songs from 3,160 species, representing a significant portion of the over 6,500 known songbird species that make up nearly 60% of all birds. Using a novel method that captured detailed patterns across time and frequency, rather than simple sound features like pitch, the team identified eight basic acoustic motifs that form the foundation of all birdsong.
