'60 Minutes' correspondent Scott Pelley fired after criticizing CBS execs 03.06.2026

Scott Pelley, a 68-year-old correspondent with over two decades at "60 Minutes," has been permanently terminated by CBS News without severance. His dismissal follows a heated staff meeting on June 1 where Pelley allegedly accused CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of "murdering" the news institution. In a termination note, newly appointed "60 Minutes" executive Nick Bilton stated Pelley rejected overtures for a path forward and instead chose to "hijack" the meeting to disparage him and his qualifications with "remarkable incivility and contempt." Bilton cited Pelley's "performative display of hostility" as the reason for termination, asserting that such behavior is not conducive to the show's future success and that he heard Pelley's clear "antipathy." Pelley, who has been with CBS News for nearly 40 years, questioned Bilton's qualifications, which stem from print and documentary work, not broadcast journalism, and also raised concerns about recent mass firings at the network.
