Südafrika Goldrausch in Gugulethu 02.03.2026

In Gugulethu, an impoverished township 50 kilometers east of Johannesburg, South Africa, an illegal gold rush has erupted following a rumor of a 7-gram gold discovery and soaring gold prices. Local residents, including children, are digging for gold, driven by poverty and lack of prospects, as highlighted by South Africa's trade union COSATU. The South African mining ministry, through spokesperson Mmadikeledi Moloto, declared these activities unauthorized and illegal. The Ekurhuleni metropolitan region initiated a police operation, leading to the arrest of three men on illegal mining charges, tool confiscation, and plans to fill the excavated holes. Authorities, represented by Phakamile Mbengashe, emphasize the illegality and safety concerns, particularly for children, vowing continued enforcement despite diggers returning shortly after police intervention.
