Despite leading Eintracht to a third-place finish in the 2024/25 season, the club, now managed by Albert Riera, parted ways with him due to defensive frailties. Toppmöller is reportedly being considered by VfL Wolfsburg, where current coach Daniel Bauer is under increasing pressure after a 2:3 loss to FC Augsburg. Wolfsburg's sporting director, Pirmin Schwegler, who has a past connection with Toppmöller from their time at Eintracht, could facilitate a move. Other candidates for the Wolfsburg position include Thomas Reis and Dieter Hecking.
