SERAP Rejects Court Judgment, Vows To Appeal ₦100m Defamation Ruling 05.05.2026

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered SERAP to pay ₦100 million in damages to two DSS officials for defamation, plus public apologies, ₦1 million in litigation costs, and 10% annual interest. Justice Yusuf Halilu ruled in the ₦5.5 billion case. SERAP, via Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, called the judgment "seriously flawed" and a "travesty," vowing to appeal with lawyers Tayo Oyetibo and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa. The lawsuit follows SERAP's September 9, 2024, claims that DSS officials unlawfully entered its office after SERAP urged President Tinubu to probe NNPCL corruption and reverse fuel price hikes. SERAP alleges the government uses defamation laws to suppress accountability and criticizes the failure to investigate NNPCL, warning of a chilling effect on free speech.
