Serian Bidayuh community keeps Gawai Dayak parade alive for 56 years as three generations take part in Kampung Taee celebration 02.06.2026

For 56 consecutive years, the Bidayuh community in Kampung Taee, Serian, has meticulously preserved their Gawai Dayak tradition through an annual parade, a commitment unbroken since 1970. This year's event, held just 60 kilometers from Kuching, saw three generations of families participating, including Malvern Lister, who has attended since childhood. The procession, symbolizing the rice harvesting tradition, serves as a unifying force and a vital intergenerational link, attracting approximately 3,000 participants and visitors from both domestic and international locations, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Community members view the parade as a powerful platform to showcase Bidayuh culture globally, boosting local tourism and the economy. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the importance of such parades in introducing Sarawak's diverse culture to a wider audience, facilitated by modern media platforms.
