‘Service is the rent we pay’: Muhammad Ali remembered 10 years on 03.06.2026

Ten years after his death on June 3, 2016, boxing legend Muhammad Ali is being honored globally with a "Day of Compassion" initiated by his widow, Lonnie Ali, and centered at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville. Lonnie Ali emphasized that her husband’s impact extended far beyond his athletic achievements, embodying a philosophy of "Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on Earth" through daily acts of kindness and empathy. The Ali Center aims for this day to become an annual tradition, promoting volunteerism and addressing a perceived decline in American humanity and increased polarization. Lonnie Ali also urged political leaders to champion compassion and criticized actions weakening voting rights, asserting that denying people the right to vote obstructs equal representation.
