Severe storms cause evacuations and road closures in Eastern and Western Cape 03.06.2026

Severe weather events have triggered widespread disruptions across the Eastern and Western Cape provinces, prompting evacuations and numerous road closures. In the Gamtoos area, residents were evacuated on Wednesday evening due to rapidly rising floodwaters. Nelson Mandela Bay faces multiple road closures in areas like Kariega and Newton Park, with the municipality urging caution and advising alternative routes. Emergency services are on high alert, monitoring canals nearing capacity. Across the Garden Route, West Coast, Overberg, Cape Winelands, and Central Karoo districts, several major mountain passes and rural routes are impassable, including Meiringspoort and Swartberg Pass. Authorities are warning of potential further closures and advising motorists to avoid flooded areas and low-water bridges.
