Shah Deniz turns 30: From Caspian discovery to European energy supplier (PHOTO) 04.06.2026

Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas and condensate field is commemorating 30 years since the signing of its Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) on June 4, 1996. Located in the Caspian Sea, this massive field, discovered in 1999, holds approximately 1 trillion cubic meters of gas and 2 billion barrels of condensate, making it one of the world's largest gas-condensate fields and bp's largest gas discovery. Shah Deniz has significantly boosted Azerbaijan's economy by attracting substantial foreign investment and establishing it as a key regional and European energy supplier. Production began in 2006, and the field has since supplied gas to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey via the South Caucasus Pipeline, extending its reach to Europe with the Southern Gas Corridor in 2020. The field has yielded 271 billion cubic meters of gas and 53 million tonnes of condensate by the end of Q1 2026, with ongoing development through Shah Deniz 2 and the upcoming Shah Deniz Compression project aimed at further maximizing resource recovery.
