SHOA rules out possibility of tsunami on Chile's coasts following 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Puerto Williams 07.07.2026

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) has officially ruled out the possibility of a tsunami on the coasts of Chile after a magnitude 4.9 earthquake was recorded in the Puerto Williams area. The seismic event occurred this Tuesday at 1:39 p.m., with the epicenter located 239 kilometers southeast of the town, in the Magallanes region. According to technical reports provided by the agency, the earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers. SHOA emphasized that the event does not meet the necessary geophysical conditions to generate a tsunami in the national territory. Despite initial concern, authorities confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami resulting from this specific seismic phenomenon, maintaining calm in the areas affected by the movement in the south of the country.
