Shortage of qualified teachers in rural areas could explain differences in grades 03.07.2026

Magnús Þór Jónsson, chairman of the Icelandic Teachers' Union, believes that a shortage of professionally trained teachers in rural areas could explain differences in final exam results between municipalities and regions. He also points out that the differing backgrounds of students influence these results. This situation in rural areas may therefore be a contributing factor to why student exam outcomes are not consistent across the country. He emphasizes that both of these factors, teacher turnover and student circumstances, are significant when comparing results.
