Siesta in Czechia? Czechs may have to adopt a Mediterranean lifestyle, says scientist after heatwave 05.07.2026

Following the recent temperature record of 41.9 °C in Czechia, environmentalist Jan Hollan warns of the increasing frequency of heatwaves. According to him, climate conditions are changing so dramatically that people will have to adopt a 'Mediterranean' lifestyle, which includes, for example, more flexible working hours or a siesta. Hollan emphasizes the need for adaptation, such as avoiding the sun during the day, utilizing shade, and using cross-ventilation to cool interiors. External window shading and nighttime ventilation are also key to preventing heat accumulation. Given that tropical nights with temperatures above 20 °C negatively affect sleep and mental health, it is essential to change habits regarding building operation and personal hygiene—such as using water to cool down—to allow people to effectively manage the increasing heat.
