During the first reading of the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill on July 7, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Sim Ann announced proposed increases to jail sentences for dangerous and careless driving causing grievous hurt. The Ministry of Home Affairs aims to close the sentencing gap between these offences and those resulting in death, as current penalties are deemed inadequate for victims suffering catastrophic injuries. Under the new proposal, first-time offenders for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt would face up to seven years in jail, up from five. Repeat offenders would see maximum terms increase from ten to 13 years. Additionally, the bill proposes increasing additional uplifts for serious offenders, such as those driving under the influence. While penalties for careless driving remain unchanged to maintain alignment with death-related offences, these amendments seek to ensure justice for those causing profound physical harm.
