The epicenter was located 55 km north of Kota Belud, a city in the Sabah state on the island of Borneo. While the USGS assessed the risk of casualties and damage as low, and the US Tsunami Warning Center issued no alert due to the earthquake's depth, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported a magnitude of 6.8 and stated it would continue to monitor the situation.
