A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Malaysia early Monday, February 23rd, at 0:57 local time, according to the USGS. The epicenter was located 55 km north of Kota Belud, a city in the Sabah state on the island of Borneo. While the USGS assessed the risk of casualties and damage as low, and the US Tsunami Warning Center issued no alert due to the earthquake's depth, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported a magnitude of 6.8 and stated it would continue to monitor the situation. Tremors were felt across the west coast of Sabah and in several regions of Sarawak.
