Slavonia turns yellow like never before: Farmers place great hopes in a single crop... 07.07.2026

Slavonia is experiencing exceptional growth in sunflower cultivation, which has become a key crop for local farmers. Estimates show a significant increase in acreage, with approximately 80,000 hectares sown this year, significantly more than last year's 67,000 hectares. Igor Mikulić from the Croatian Chamber of Economy emphasizes the importance of domestic processing, although the need for a stronger processing industry is still highlighted. Farmers, such as Mato Brlošić from the Croatian Agricultural Chamber, have taken an optimistic stance due to favorable weather, which could allow for an earlier harvest in mid-August. However, the year's success depends on prices; farmers are hoping for an increase in sunflower prices to offset losses caused by low wheat purchase prices. Sunflower is considered key to the stability of agricultural holdings in this region.
