Smoke Cloud Over Vienna: Tangente Closed Following Major Fire, Public Transport Also Affected 04.07.2026

A major fire in a waste management facility in Vienna-Donaustadt, which was brought under control late Friday evening, has caused widespread traffic disruptions. The Southeast Tangente (A23) had to be closed in both directions between the Kaisermühlen junction and the Stadlau Tunnel, as were ÖBB rail lines between the Main Station and Wien Aspern Nord, leading to train cancellations and delays. The U2 station Stadlau had to be bypassed temporarily. Emergency crews from the Vienna Fire Department, operating under "Alarm Level 4" with approximately 120 personnel and water cannons, were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the hazardous waste area. The risk of collapse complicated the cooling operations, which lasted into the early morning hours. There were no injuries.
