Social Media-Verbot: „Geht an der Wirklichkeit vorbei“ – CSU attackiert Koalitionspartner 22.02.2026

The CSU party is criticizing its coalition partners, the CDU and SPD, for their proposed ban on social media for children, arguing it is unrealistic and an admission of failure. Alexander Hoffmann, chairman of the CSU state group in the Bundestag, stated that children learn responsible social media use through media literacy and protection from harmful content, not through outright bans. The German Child Protection Agency echoed this sentiment, calling for greater accountability from platform operators rather than excluding children from digital spaces. The CDU proposed a minimum age of 14 for social media, with special protection until 16, a stance also supported by the SPD, which is urging swift action on clear rules and effective protective mechanisms to combat addictive algorithms and online harm. The EU's Digital Services Act currently lacks a general age limit, but the European Commission is considering such a regulation, with a decision expected by summer.
