MEP Fidias Panayiotou, leader of the Direct Democracy party, urged President Nikos Christodoulides to address high electricity prices, claiming solar parks generate power at 5-8 cents per kilowatt-hour but sell it for 25-30 cents, enabling a 20% price cut. The Energy Market Association (EMA) strongly refuted this, stating Panayiotou's claims overlook operating costs, overheads, lack of energy storage, and frequent curtailments to renewables. EMA noted solar energy from commercial parks accounts for only 6.4% of total energy traded since the competitive market launched in 2025, with average prices far lower than cited.
