Sonia Dayan-Herzbrun, Professor Emerita of Political Sociology at Université Paris Cité, will discuss her book "Le sionisme, une invention européenne - genèse d’une idéologie" (Lux Editions) on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in Rennes. Dayan-Herzbrun argues that Zionism's origins lie not in rabbinical tradition but within European modernity. Historically, Jewish communities viewed their connection to a promised land as symbolic or mystical, a concept rooted in Christian Western views of Jews as an exiled people. It was only in the late 19th century that this relationship began to transform into a pursuit of a concrete geographical and political reality.
