Sorry, Amazon, you couldn't pick a worse time to bring a phone to market: IDC analyst 20.03.2026

Amazon is reportedly developing a new smartphone, internally codenamed "Transformer," its first since the unsuccessful Fire phone in 2014. This venture, led by the ZeroOne unit, aims to integrate with Alexa devices and prioritize Amazon shopping. However, industry tracker IDC, through vice president Francisco Jeronimo, warns that the timing is exceptionally poor. The smartphone market is projected to contract by 13% in 2026 due to a memory shortage crisis, and Amazon faces formidable competition from established players like Apple and Samsung. While a niche for a "dumb" phone exists, it's too small for Amazon's scale. Jeronimo suggests potential success lies in leveraging AI capabilities and Amazon's extensive ecosystem, but acknowledges intense competition from rivals like Apple, Google, Samsung, and OpenAI, making the execution risk extremely high.
