South Africa condemns 'fake videos' of alleged xenophobic attacks 07.05.2026

South Africa's government has condemned "fake videos and images" circulating online, which some claim depict xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals. This statement follows increased diplomatic tension with other African nations, including Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, who have raised concerns about rising anti-immigrant sentiment and potential violence. Ghana has formally appealed to the African Union for a discussion and fact-finding mission. While acknowledging protests against illegal immigration by South Africans, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated that "fake videos and images" are intended to harm South Africa's reputation and its "better Africa agenda." The government insists that any incidents involving foreigners are due to general criminality, not xenophobia, and that South Africa is a welcoming nation.
