Cymbal of unity? South Korea and Japan leaders bash out K-pop hits after summit talks 14.01.2026

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concluded a two-day summit in Nara, Japan, with an unexpected joint drum performance of K-pop hits "Golden" and "Dynamite." Takaichi, a former university heavy metal drummer, praised Lee's quick learning, while Lee expressed his hope for a future-oriented relationship, stating, "we will create a future-oriented relationship with one heart." This symbolic gesture followed a week after Lee's visit to Beijing, where he was urged by Xi Jinping to stand on "the right side of history," positioning Lee as a mediator between regional tensions. The summit also addressed substantive issues like DNA testing for victims of the 1942 Chosei coalmine disaster, economic security talks, and North Korea, though thornier historical disputes were avoided.
