Southampton murder involving kirpan sparks anger against police response and fears of religious division 02.06.2026

Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the December 3, 2025, murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak in Southampton, stabbing him multiple times with a kirpan. Digwa's mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, faces sentencing for assisting an offender after removing the weapon from the scene. The case ignited controversy over the police response, captured on bodycam footage showing officers handcuffing and arresting the dying Nowak for assault despite his claims of being stabbed, while Digwa alleged his turban was pulled. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood addressed Parliament, condemning the attack and pushing back against claims of biased policing and calls to restrict Sikhs' right to carry kirpans, stressing the distinction between religious observance and criminal use of knives.
