Spain's warning to the West: Close your borders, wreck your economy 09.04.2026

Spain's government, through a technical report by the National Office of Foresight and Strategy (ONPE), warns that significantly reducing migration flows would severely damage its economy and social fabric. Projections indicate a 30% annual decrease in migration could shrink Spain's GDP by 5% within a decade, escalating to 22% by 2075. This would lead to the abandonment of over 220,000 agri-food farms, the potential disappearance of 20% of small municipalities, and the closure of tens of thousands of school classrooms. The report also highlights the critical role of migrant workers in sectors like agriculture and healthcare, where they fill essential roles and contribute to income growth without negatively impacting native-born workers' wages or employment. The healthcare system, in particular, faces a potential 28% drop in care supply as the elderly dependent population rises, while the medical workforce could see a reduction of 64,000 specialists.
