Spandoeken, vuurwerk en nuance: drukbezocht protest tegen azc in Nieuw-Lekkerland 10.02.2026

On Monday evening, approximately a thousand protesters marched through Nieuw-Lekkerland, expressing strong opposition to the establishment of an asylum seeker center (azc) in the village. Carrying Dutch flags, banners, and lit torches, the demonstrators delivered over 10,000 signatures against the plan to Mayor Theo Segers at the village hall, where an information meeting was held. The municipality of Molenlanden has designated the local municipal yard as one of four potential locations for an azc, intended to house up to 125 refugees. While many residents voiced concerns about safety and the impact on the community, citing negative portrayals of azcs in media, others advocated for compassion and hospitality, highlighting differing opinions within the village. The protest concluded with minor incidents, including the arrest of one individual and two fines for fireworks.
