Sparpläne DB Cargo will über 6.000 Stellen streichen 19.02.2026

DB Cargo, the freight division of Deutsche Bahn, plans to eliminate 6,200 jobs, nearly half of its current 14,000 full-time positions, as part of a significant cost-saving initiative led by CEO Bernhard Oswald. This measure aims to make the struggling subsidiary profitable by the end of the year, a requirement stemming from an EU ruling that prohibits Deutsche Bahn from covering its losses. Failure to achieve profitability could lead to the dissolution of DB Cargo. The company's financial performance in the first half of 2025 showed a 10% decrease in transported goods and a 9% revenue drop to 2.5 billion euros, with an operating loss of 96 million euros. Oswald's strategy, extending to 2030, includes streamlining administration, increasing fleet productivity, and focusing more on European markets to counter declining demand from key German sectors like automotive, chemical, and steel.
