Mit VideoParteien im VergleichSteuerduell SPD gegen CDU: Wo Bürger mehr sparen 18.02.2026

Germany's governing coalition is divided over proposed income tax reforms, with the SPD advocating for a higher basic tax-free allowance and an increased top tax rate to benefit low and middle earners, while the CDU/CSU proposes shifting the threshold for the top tax rate to higher incomes to provide relief to those with rising earnings. Calculations by the German Taxpayers' Institute (DSi) and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) reveal significantly different outcomes depending on the model adopted. The SPD's plan would offer modest savings for singles earning €2,500 to €5,000 monthly, with less benefit for higher earners, and moderate savings for families. Conversely, the CDU/CSU's proposal, which could cost around €9 billion annually, would disproportionately benefit the top 25% of income earners, offering substantial relief to families and individuals with higher incomes by delaying the application of the top tax rate.
