The two-year-old Domenico has died in Italy following a heart transplant, a case that has garnered significant media attention. Born with a heart defect in 2023, Domenico received a donor heart shortly before Christmas. However, the organ was severely damaged during transport from Bozen to Naples due to improper cooling with dry ice, resulting in temperatures of approximately minus 80 degrees Celsius instead of the standard 4 degrees Celsius. Despite the irreparable damage, the organ was implanted as Domenico's own heart had already been removed. Doctors ultimately deemed a further transplant futile as his other organs, including his kidneys, had ceased functioning. An autopsy is underway, and his mother, Patrizia Mercolino, is seeking an explanation for the treatment errors and plans to establish a foundation in her son's name.
