Spider silk could replace synthetic materials - RÚV.is 04.07.2026

Students at the University of Iceland, including Ragnar Jón Hrólfsson and Elín Hrönn Jónsdóttir, are currently working on the development of a new technology where spider silk is used instead of nylon thread. The group, which consists of five master's students and one bachelor's student in life sciences, aims to create an environmentally friendly and biodegradable material. The silk is derived from the Darwin's bark spider, which is known for producing one of the strongest webs in the world. Instead of using spiders, the students will use the yeast pichia pastoris to produce the material. The team reached the top 10 in the Golden Egg (Gulleggin) competition and intends to participate in the iGEM synthetic biology competition in November, marking the first time in Iceland's history that such a focus has been achieved in an international competition.
