On May 7, 2026, a 50-year-old Singapore permanent resident named Koh Lee Hwa, a repairman, had his appeal against his conviction and sentence for four sexual offenses dismissed. He was originally sentenced in November 2025 to 12 years and three weeks in jail and 13 strokes of the cane for raping a woman in her flat on August 23, 2021, while performing repair work. Due to his age exceeding 50 in January 2026, Koh could no longer receive caning. The Court of Appeal imposed an additional six months of imprisonment to compensate for the lost deterrent effect of the caning, stating that physical punishment and imprisonment provide solace to victims. Koh, who was 45 at the time of the offenses, will begin his updated sentence later in May and remains on bail with his daughter as his bailor.
