S’porean woman, 33, says she finally understands what it means to be a ‘minority’ after living in Switzerland for 7 years, sparks discussion 06.05.2026

A 33-year-old Singaporean woman, Olivia Chin, shared on social media her experience of living in Switzerland for seven years, stating it was only then she began to understand what it means to be a "minority." Growing up in Singapore, she was part of the ethnic Chinese majority and never had to question her sense of belonging. However, in Switzerland, she frequently found herself as one of the few Asian women and encountered language barriers and social exclusion, leading her to reflect on similar experiences of minorities in Singapore. Her post sparked debate, with some relating to her feelings of being an outsider, while others questioned if her experience as a foreigner could be equated to the systemic issues faced by minorities in their own country, and why it took so long for her to reach this perspective. Chin clarified that her reflection was based on accumulated experiences and acknowledged the difference between her situation and that of minorities facing discrimination, emphasizing her privileged position as someone who chose to move abroad and has a home to return to.
