Sports tourism can expand sustainability 03.06.2026

Cyprus and European Union officials met in Nicosia for a two-day international conference to discuss the potential of sports tourism in promoting wellness and sustainability. The conference focused on various aspects of sustainable sports tourism, including its regional and community impacts, marketing strategies, public-private partnerships, and technological advancements. This initiative aligns with recent EU council conclusions recognizing sports tourism's contribution to sustainable development and Cyprus's EU presidency priorities. Officials highlighted that sports tourism, encompassing travel to sporting events and engaging in physical activities like cycling and hiking, can encourage exploration of lesser-known areas, boost off-peak tourism, and help establish Cyprus as a year-round destination by fostering physical and mental well-being, social inclusion, and economic growth.
